This is the rules handover for release day
The Reality Fracture Update Bulletin is the bridge between preview-season wording and the rules that judges and players use in actual games. It installs empower Jace in rule 701.71, defines Heartwood tokens, clarifies what it means to attack a player alone, and changes the official Oracle text of several older cards.
For most kitchen-table games, the printed reminder text will get you through. For tournaments, Commander edge cases and rules disputes, Oracle and the Comprehensive Rules are authoritative. The bulletin is valuable because it identifies where a familiar-looking phrase now has a precise meaning.
Empower Jace creates one very specific planeswalker
When an effect tells you to empower Jace N, you first create a blue Jace planeswalker token with zero loyalty if you do not already control one. It has minus-one to surveil 1 and minus-three to draw a card. You then put N loyalty counters on a Jace token you control.
The important restriction is easy to miss: empower Jace cannot add counters to a nontoken Jace planeswalker. If you already control a Jace planeswalker token, you cannot choose to create another just because the existing one is low on loyalty. Targeted spells can also fail completely if every target becomes illegal, which means the empower instruction on that spell will not happen.

Jiang Yanggu, Alone ↗Illustrated by Dmitry BurmakHeartwood is coloured, typed and ready to tap
A Heartwood token is a red and green artifact with the Heartwood subtype and an ability that taps for red or green mana. Those characteristics are part of the predefined token, so a card can simply say 'create a Heartwood token' without printing the whole object every time.
The colour matters for protection and other effects, while the artifact type matters for cards that count or sacrifice artifacts. Wizards also notes that early physical Heartwood tokens use a colourless artifact frame even though the rules and reminder text make them red and green. Treat the words as authoritative, not the frame treatment.
Attacking alone now looks at each defending player
A creature attacks a player alone when it is the only creature declared as an attacker against that particular player. In multiplayer, other creatures may still attack another player, planeswalker or battle without breaking the condition for the first attacker.
That is a narrower and more useful definition than checking whether only one creature attacked anywhere. Commander players are the most likely to notice it because a single combat can be divided between several opponents and permanents.
Older cards changed too
Dragon Engine and Traxos, Scourge of Kroog now have the Dragon creature type. Sylvan Primordial has been rewritten so its controller searches once and all eligible Forests enter together. Generator Servant and Arena of Glory now make clear that spending any of the generated mana on a creature spell is enough to grant haste.
Charmed Pendant also receives cleaner text after The Hobbit rules update changed how its milling ability is classified. These edits are mostly clarifications, but they can change type-based interactions and remove arguments over timing. If a printed card disagrees with Oracle, use the current Oracle wording.
What players should do now
Reality Fracture cards carrying the FRA code are legal in Standard, Pioneer and Modern as well as Commander and other eternal formats from release. FRC cards enter Commander, Legacy and Vintage, while Special Guests cards do not gain new format legality simply because they appear with an SPG set code.
Before an event, read the release notes for cards in your deck, update digital deck lists after Arena prompts, and use the official rules page when a summary conflicts with a later rules document. Players opening paper product in Europe should also check retailer updates because Wizards warned that some non-Play-Booster products may arrive later, although Play Boosters and Prerelease Packs remained on schedule.
- Use Oracle text for Dragon Engine, Traxos, Sylvan Primordial, Generator Servant, Arena of Glory and Charmed Pendant
- Remember that empower Jace works with Jace planeswalker tokens, not ordinary Jace cards
- Treat Heartwood tokens as red and green artifacts even if an early token uses a colourless frame
- Check set codes before assuming a Commander or Special Guests card is Standard legal
